The ancient Antinori family has lived in Florence since the early 13th century when they moved here from Calenzano, a small town between Florence and Prato, where their presence was recorded back in 1188. The merchant family was registered with the Guild of Silk Weavers since 1285 and later with the Guild of Bankers, thanks also to the branches that opened in Bruges and Lyons, and the growing network of business in Europe.They were also wine producers and merchants, and it was this business that became prevalent over time: Giovanni di Piero Antinori registered with the Guild of Winemakers in 1385 . Production and sales of wine became increasingly important for the family and by the 16 th century they were known to various clients outside Italy.Wine remained the family's main passion and activity to the extent that in 1898 , when the “ Fattoria dei Marchesi Lodovico e Piero Antinori ” was founded, the property and farms were transformed into a really modern and well-organized business.It was founded by the two sons of Marchese Niccolo` - a direct descendent of that Niccolo` who purchased Palazzo Antinori in 1506 – who had already devoted a good deal of time to making Tuscan wines a fine quality, well-known product. DINO ILLUMINATI NAME AND SURNAME OF THIS WINE Love for this land, passion, engagement and devotion are fondamental elements to create this prestigious wine. The cooperation between Mr. Dino Illuminati, his wife Marina and his sons Lorenzo, Stefano and Anna, together with the technical support of Mr. Valerio Barbieri, agronomist, Mr. Claudio Cappellacci and Mr. Giorgio Marone, both oenologists, has allowed a continue and significant growth of the company, under every aspect. Today, the interested territory covers more than 100 hectares, belonging to Controguerra D.O.C. areas and areas of D.O.C.G. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane.The winery boats state of the art technology, particularly in the wine-making department. The three underground cellars fully thermoconditioned, are used to produce sparkling wine (classic method), for ageing wine in 25-60 hectolitre Slavonia oak casks and 225 litre barriques, and for the refinement in bottles for a variable period of 12-18 months, depending on different types. THE LAND There are places often forgotten when we talk about wines, but, fortunately when recalled for a particular reason, they clearly demonstrate all their historical and technical importance. The landscape of Controguerra in the province of Teramo, located between the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea and the gorgeous mountains of the Gran Sasso, widely celebrated also in verse by Gabriele D’Annunzio, is particularly endowed with a fortunate natural position, renowned for its typical vineyards and its wines. It has been historically ascertained that Annibal, after the battle by Trasimeno Lake (217 B.C.), discovered in Controguerra a resort and a wine which revitalized his troops. Its vineyards produce special grapes that make rare and prestigious wines destined to grace the table and reserves of those who in Italy and in the world, can appreciate the product of such a generous land. FROM NICO' to NICOLA: A PASSION SURROUNDING 4 GENERATIONS During the second half of the last century, when the geographical boundaries were different from those of today, an impassioned master in the art of wine-making, Nicola Illuminati, around 1890, began the activity of wine grower and set up the winery called “Fattoria Nico`”. He handed down, to his grandson Dino, his love for wine making. Dino Illuminati now carries on the cultural tradition of making good wine, employing the same skilled craftsmanship of his illustrious grandfather, in an ideal fusion of both traditional and modern methods so that every bottle is a “bottle of Reserve”. Today, these bottles of extraordinary wine, exported all over the world, are the pride of Dino Illuminati, grandson of the founder, Nico`, and, in turn grandfather of the child Nicola, the grandson of the latest generation.
